Dr. Mei-Chen Spiegelberg joined the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Göttingen in October 2026. She completed her PhD in Sociology and was based at the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University from 2024 to 2026. Her research takes a sociological perspective on intercultural communication, focusing on Chinese-German relations. Further research interests include Expatriate and Migration Studies, Media Sociology, and qualitative research methods, particularly ethnography. Her work draws primarily on approaches from the sociology of knowledge and postcolonial theory.
Prior to joining the Department of East Asian Studies, she taught and conducted research in the Media Sociology Working Group at Bielefeld University. Her teaching addressed topics including digital Orientalism and online activism in China. From 2018 to 2023, she served as a Project Researcher in Collaborative Research Centre 1285 at TU Dresden. As part of the CRC, she worked on the concept of invectivity and developed a research interest in the dynamics of scandalization and the social negotiation of conflict in transnational contexts, particularly with regard to China.
