I will do this by analyzing how the ontology of self remains fluid in translation of four key terms in China&#8217;s BRI narrative: \u2018Five Pillars (Wu Tong \u4e94\u901a)\u2019, \u2018Chinese Dream (Zhongguo Meng \u4e2d\u56fd\u68a6),\u2019 \u2018Community of Common Destiny (Mingyun Gongtongti \u547d\u8fd0\u5171\u540c\u4f53) ,\u2019 and \u2018harmony in diversity (he er bu tong \u548c\u800c\u4e0d\u540c) .\u2019 First, we will look at the epistemological and ontological \u2018self\u2019 in Western thought in contradistinction to the Chinese notion of \u2018self (ziwo \u81ea\u6211).\u2019 By examining selected uses of the term ziwo in Chinese literature over the past two thousand years, we arrive at a constructed Chinese notion of self which resembles the epistemological more than the ontological Western \u2018self,\u2019 while failing to reach equivalency with either.
